What to do
Ask AI to derive tests from public behavior and risks, then review assertions and run mutation or fault-based checks. Generated tests are valuable drafts, but passing tests do not prove that the assertions are meaningful.
Start from behavior
Provide the contract, invariants, examples, and known failure modes. Ask for a test matrix before code. This exposes missing cases and prevents the model from simply mirroring the current implementation.
Cover meaningful partitions
Include normal inputs, boundaries, invalid inputs, state transitions, failures, and relevant concurrency. Prefer a small set of distinct cases over many near-duplicates.
- Assert externally visible outcomes.
- Keep fixtures minimal and readable.
- Avoid mocks that restate implementation internals.
- Name the risk each test protects.
Challenge the suite
Temporarily introduce a plausible defect or use mutation testing to confirm tests fail. Review skipped branches and weak assertions. Keep generated tests only when a maintainer can explain their purpose.
